How it works

The makers at Fat Brain Toys have created a 3D brain teaser puzzle called Coggy. Coggy is a game that requires the user to use their logic skills to match the puzzle pieces to the image presented on one of the forty cards that come with the game. Coggy is comprised of sixteen cogwheels of a variety of colors, and the reverse side of each wheel is black and white. Along with the sixteen cogwheels are forty cards with forty different ways to put Coggy together. To play the game, what you must do is put all the cogs together in the same pattern that you see on the card. The difficulty comes in when you have to put the cogs together and then rotate the cogs in order for them to click and snap into place to form the next level of the puzzle. With three levels of difficulty to play, Coggy will make your child use their reasoning skills, spatial awareness skills, and cognitive learning skills to solve each puzzle.

Design

Design

Coggy is designed to be individual cog pieces that are able to fit into each other. When looking at the game at first sight, it would appear as if Coggy is just like any other puzzle where the pieces are laid flat and snapped into place. Coggy is more than just an ordinary puzzle. Because the cog pieces are round and snap into each other, they also rotate into each other, so when you are building the puzzles, you may have to turn the cogs into each other so that other pieces can fit into place where they belong according to the picture on the card. As you start to build the puzzle, you will soon learn that you have to manipulate and turn the puzzle pieces several times for them to all fit into each other. The reverse sides of the cog pieces are black and white. The black and white pieces are used for more advanced play and for cards that are at a higher level of difficulty than the colored pieces, which can be easier to play with because the colors allow for more variety in the pieces and allow for there to be more options when it comes to solving the puzzle. Along with the cog pieces, you will also get forty cards with forty different pictures on them for you to solve.
Safety

Safety

Coggy is a game that is not meant for younger or smaller children. The pieces that come with Coggy are small and can easily pose a choking hazard. Although the pieces are small and colorful and look fun, it is recommended that children who are still young enough to not know what to put and not put into their mouths should stay away from Coggy. Even if an adult is present with the child, keep the Coggy pieces out of the hands of babies or toddlers. Coggy is meant for the more mature child who can play with small pieces, not lose them, and know not to put the pieces in their mouth.
Age Range

Age Range

Coggy is designed for children from ages six-years-old to twelve-years-old. It should be noted that adults also love solving the Coggy puzzles. Adults as young as eighteen-years-old and nineteen-years-old love playing with Coggy. Although the manufacturers believe a child above the age of twelve-years-old may be too intelligent to be stimulated by the game, it appears as if Coggy has no age limit for all who want to play the brainteaser and solve the puzzles.
Spatial Skills

Spatial Skills

One of the main benefits of playing the Coggy puzzle game is that it helps children with their spatial skills. When a child sees the picture of the puzzle on the card, they will then have to take that picture and recreate it in real life. When doing that transition of taking something that is two dimensional and turning it into something that is three dimensional, your child will have to create the space necessary to make the puzzle come to life. This will enable them to use their minds and their reasoning skills to be able to match the pieces, and in the beginning, it will be extremely easy to do, which will then also boost your child’s confidence in learning. As the puzzles become increasingly difficult, your child will then begin to think more different than they have in the past, and their brain skills will be stretched and enhanced as they continue to solve the puzzles.
Logic Skills

Logic Skills

Another skill that Coggy helps to develop in your child is their logic skills. When your child looks at the photo on the card, they will have to reason how to recreate that picture with the Coggy pieces. Your child’s mind will begin to take several steps, and the first step is going to be recognizing the correct pieces and choosing those pieces to complete the challenge. Once the pieces are chosen, your child will then reason how to connect the pieces so that they are in the proper place, and since Coggy pieces rotate and snap into each other, there will have to be careful planning on how to move the pieces around in order to do the puzzle correctly. Your child will be using their skills at thinking ahead in order for them to figure out the best way to solve the puzzle. Finally, your child will execute the putting together of the puzzle in order to finish it. With these three phases of thinking coupled with the physical execution of the putting together of the puzzle, your child will round out their critical thinking skills, which will help them in school and any other endeavor they go on that requires logically solving problems.
Sense Stimulation

Sense Stimulation

Coggy is a toy that not only stimulates brain development and critical thinking, but it also helps stimulate your child’s senses. The pieces of Coggy are very colorful on one side and black and white on the other, which helps your child differentiate between colors, but also helps your child use their visual skills to recognize pieces and match them to the card. If your child is using the black and white puzzles on the Coggy game, then their visual skills will be enhanced as they not only have to differentiate between colors, but they will also have to differentiate between different shades of colors that will make the game more difficult, but will also encourage your child to think harder. Your child’s sense of touch will also be stimulated as they have to manipulate the pieces in their hands in order to get the puzzle to fit together properly, and their hand/eye coordination skills will be exercised as they visually build the puzzle then physically put it together.
Puzzles

Puzzles

There are two types of puzzles for the Coggy game. There is the color side, which will require the use of all the colored pieces of the Coggy game to make puzzles, but there is also the reverse side of the Coggy pieces, which are black and white. The black and white side of the Coggy pieces are the more difficult pieces because entire puzzles have to be built on just two colors. Although this seems to be a more easy endeavour because there are less colors, it is more difficult because there is more room for mistakes since your child will have to deal with shades of colors as well as pieces that look alike getting mistaken for each other. Every puzzle has a solution and they get more and more difficult as you increase the level of difficulty in the cards.
Levels

Levels

There are four levels to the puzzles of the Coggy game. There is beginner, intermediate, difficult, and very difficult. As your pull the cards from the various levels, you will have to use your skills at a higher level to solve the puzzles.

The beginner level will start your child off with the most simple of puzzles that will encourage their thinking and boost their confidence. The intermediate level will challenge your child’s thinking and start the process of enhancing their critical thinking skills. The difficult and very difficult levels will help your child to begin to develop their logic skills and their reasoning skills to take a difficult puzzle off the page and build it in real life. These puzzles will enhance your child’s cognitive learning skills and help them to problem solve on a different level than they have before. They will begin to really sit back and think hard about how to solve a problem without the aid of electronics or any other source except their own mind. Your child will begin to exercise various parts of their brain that will help them to become better thinkers.
