How it works
Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 combines all of the Marvel superheroes and supervillains from all the most popular Marvel movies and Marvel comic books into one game. Each popular character is redesigned to have the shape of classic Lego figures dressed in the appropriate superhero or supervillain costume. Some of the characters you can find in the game are Spider-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy. You can select these superheroes to face super villains like the Green Goblin and Carnage. The game takes place in various locations in different time periods all over the globe from Ancient Egypt, a futuristic New York City, the Hulk Planet, and the Great American West. In each scenario, you battle out between good and evil in a quest to finish the game and save Planet Earth from the grips of evil.
Storyline
Kang has a thirst for time travel, and the Guardians must follow him from time period to time period as they continue to pursue him. Along the way, the Guardians of the Galaxy meet up with and take with them several Marvel superheroes like Doctor Strange, Captain America, and Spider-Man (and a cameo by Marvel creator Stan Lee) as you all work together until you finally reach Kang the Conqueror and defeat him and the myriad of super villains you encounter along the way. Kang takes cities and countries from various time periods and places them all together in one big city he calls Chronopolis. The superheroes must travel from period to period within the city to find their way to Kang the Conqueror and defeat him once and for all.
Characters
There are also some movie spoilers in the dialogue of the game, so if you have not seen all of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then beware that some movie plot points may be spoiled for you. In the event that you do not know a particular character, you can click on their profile and a drop-down menu will give you their history along with when they first appeared in the comics. The popular characters that can be found in Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 are superheroes: Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Drax, Groot, Hulk, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Star-Lord, Thor, and Wasp. You will also find super villains like Carnage, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Klaw, Loki, Ravonna, and Kang the Conqueror.
Game Play
Although there is a more complicated storyline, playing the game is just as enjoyable as playing the original Lego Marvel Superheroes. In the beginning, the gameplay is basically set for you as you go through the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy making their initial attempt to find and defeat Kang the Conqueror. It’s only after some time you get to have free reign over where you want to play and what storyline you want to follow as a part of the overall story that is being told.
Battle Mode
The battle mode is also a nice break from the overall storyline that can get quite muddied because there are so many characters doing so many things at the same time as you take the journey to the game and the story’s end. Battle mode is a great place to be creative and create your own story that is just as entertaining as the game’s story.
Bugs
A second glitch is that when having your character perform a certain task like travel through time or attempt to solve a riddle or problem to advance the group and the story, the game automatically shuts down and returns back to the main menu. When this happens, game progress is not saved and you will have to return back to the last game save. This can be frustrating as you get further into the game because the game gets more difficult and you will have to repeat harder tasks that may have taken you days to complete. Other overall glitches that have caused some headaches are the skipping or freezing of movements by characters or vehicles they are traveling in, and just simple freezing of the game or the story jumping ahead a bit as you move the several characters around the screen to perform tasks to get to higher levels.
Graphics
It has also been found that the graphics on the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 are universal along with many gaming platforms. Whether you are using Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox or any other gaming console, the graphics will remain the same no matter what. Many have also found that in their opinion, PlayStation 4 has a clearer more sharp graphic than the other consoles. It is a better option to purchase this game for PlayStation 4 if that is available. If not, then the graphics are still great no matter what gaming console you own.
Imagination
The game, like all video games, puts your teen in the story as a character and by using their imagination they can become these characters and use their skills at cognitive reasoning, problems solving, hand-eye coordination, and multi-tasking to move their characters through obstacles and find the tools and treasures necessary to break down barriers, walls, and find items that will help them defeat villains.
Every time your teen finishes a level or reaches a new goal in the game, it teaches them how doing work and following through on a task reaps their desired result. Many would say this is a good training ground for developing confidence and the skills necessary to be successful in life. As with everything, moderation is key, but the game is enjoyable and does have its benefits.
