How it works

Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 combines all of the Marvel superheroes and supervillains from all the most popular Marvel movies and Marvel comic books into one game. Each popular character is redesigned to have the shape of classic Lego figures dressed in the appropriate superhero or supervillain costume. Some of the characters you can find in the game are Spider-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy. You can select these superheroes to face super villains like the Green Goblin and Carnage. The game takes place in various locations in different time periods all over the globe from Ancient Egypt, a futuristic New York City, the Hulk Planet, and the Great American West. In each scenario, you battle out between good and evil in a quest to finish the game and save Planet Earth from the grips of evil.

Storyline

Storyline

The Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 has been created in the spirit of an actual Lego Movie. The game is chock full of one-liners, character quips, and a story that takes 9-12 hours to complete if played all the way through without stopping. The game begins with the Guardians of the Galaxy as they are called upon to fight and defeat Kang the Conqueror.

Kang has a thirst for time travel, and the Guardians must follow him from time period to time period as they continue to pursue him. Along the way, the Guardians of the Galaxy meet up with and take with them several Marvel superheroes like Doctor Strange, Captain America, and Spider-Man (and a cameo by Marvel creator Stan Lee) as you all work together until you finally reach Kang the Conqueror and defeat him and the myriad of super villains you encounter along the way. Kang takes cities and countries from various time periods and places them all together in one big city he calls Chronopolis. The superheroes must travel from period to period within the city to find their way to Kang the Conqueror and defeat him once and for all.
Characters

Characters

One of the most popular and most well-received aspects of Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 is the wide variety of characters you can collect and play with as you journey to defeat Kang the Conqueror. Many have found it entertaining that several minor characters from the Marvel Universe like Klaw and the Black Knight are also included in the game. The level at which you can switch between all of these characters has made players even more involved and dedicated to playing the game and finishing out the storyline. There is no real introduction to any of the characters, and it is assumed that the player will know who all of these characters are.

There are also some movie spoilers in the dialogue of the game, so if you have not seen all of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then beware that some movie plot points may be spoiled for you. In the event that you do not know a particular character, you can click on their profile and a drop-down menu will give you their history along with when they first appeared in the comics. The popular characters that can be found in Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 are superheroes: Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Drax, Groot, Hulk, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Star-Lord, Thor, and Wasp. You will also find super villains like Carnage, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Klaw, Loki, Ravonna, and Kang the Conqueror.
Game Play

Game Play

Lego Marvel Superheroes 1 for PlayStation 4 was given great reviews. Many of the reviews were because the story took place in New York City and had many side games, subplots, and twists and turns that made the game interesting and difficult to complete. Some have said that the game had so many options it could be played for quite some time. With the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2, there are several cities and periods of time to play with causing some users to feel the game gets too confusing. There is also a larger set of characters to choose from.

Although there is a more complicated storyline, playing the game is just as enjoyable as playing the original Lego Marvel Superheroes. In the beginning, the gameplay is basically set for you as you go through the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy making their initial attempt to find and defeat Kang the Conqueror. It’s only after some time you get to have free reign over where you want to play and what storyline you want to follow as a part of the overall story that is being told.
Battle Mode

Battle Mode

What’s new in this version of the Lego Marvel Superheroes series is the battle mode. When the battle mode is selected, up to four players can each choose their individual character and place them in a battle against each other to earn points and see who is the most powerful superhero in the game. Because each character has their own set of special powers and special skills, this mode can, at times, be very unbalanced and unfair as some character are more powerful than other characters; however, the real enjoyment comes from being able to be placed in over-the-top situations that are indicative of the Lego universe of low-brow jokes and unlikely scenarios.

The battle mode is also a nice break from the overall storyline that can get quite muddied because there are so many characters doing so many things at the same time as you take the journey to the game and the story’s end. Battle mode is a great place to be creative and create your own story that is just as entertaining as the game’s story.
Bugs

Bugs

The biggest problem is the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 is that it has several glitches and bugs that can hinder your progress or cause the game to shut down altogether. The first bug that has caused a problem is that as several characters follow you around during the battle to find Kang the Conqueror, you can switch to any character you see fit. When some users have switched to another character that was moving around and following the group, they seemed to freeze in place when selected not giving the user the use of that character. The glitch seems to not allow the characters to be swapped hindering gameplay.

A second glitch is that when having your character perform a certain task like travel through time or attempt to solve a riddle or problem to advance the group and the story, the game automatically shuts down and returns back to the main menu. When this happens, game progress is not saved and you will have to return back to the last game save. This can be frustrating as you get further into the game because the game gets more difficult and you will have to repeat harder tasks that may have taken you days to complete. Other overall glitches that have caused some headaches are the skipping or freezing of movements by characters or vehicles they are traveling in, and just simple freezing of the game or the story jumping ahead a bit as you move the several characters around the screen to perform tasks to get to higher levels.
Graphics

Graphics

Like most video game consoles on the market, PS4 uses 4K graphics in all of their movie games. 4K is a reference to the 4,000 pixels found in the horizontal display of the game. Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 uses 4K graphics technology, which gives the game its movie-like feel. Many have found that the graphics for this game are top-notch and of the high standard desired by avid video gamers.

It has also been found that the graphics on the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 are universal along with many gaming platforms. Whether you are using Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox or any other gaming console, the graphics will remain the same no matter what. Many have also found that in their opinion, PlayStation 4 has a clearer more sharp graphic than the other consoles. It is a better option to purchase this game for PlayStation 4 if that is available. If not, then the graphics are still great no matter what gaming console you own.
Imagination

Imagination

Although many see video games as a detriment to physical development due to the fact that the user is pretty much sedentary the entire time they are using the game, video games do harness and develop the imagination of the person playing the game. Many parents are hesitant to promote gaming for their kids in a time where physical fitness is at the top of the list for many parents, but Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 is a great way for kids and teens to exercise their minds and imaginations.

The game, like all video games, puts your teen in the story as a character and by using their imagination they can become these characters and use their skills at cognitive reasoning, problems solving, hand-eye coordination, and multi-tasking to move their characters through obstacles and find the tools and treasures necessary to break down barriers, walls, and find items that will help them defeat villains.

Every time your teen finishes a level or reaches a new goal in the game, it teaches them how doing work and following through on a task reaps their desired result. Many would say this is a good training ground for developing confidence and the skills necessary to be successful in life. As with everything, moderation is key, but the game is enjoyable and does have its benefits.
Price

Price

With the high level of graphics, intricate storyline and plotline, and a large number of characters and tasks to complete, a game of this kind can be played for months if not years. The price tag of this game is fair for the amount of entertainment you will get as well as the time it will take you to complete the entire game if you are clever enough to get that far. This is also a game that once completed is like re-watching a movie and still enjoy the second or third time around.
Conclusion

Conclusion

The Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation is a great game to buy if you are an avid comic book fan or a fan of the Marvel superhero universe. The game includes almost every character found in the Marvel comics including Marvel creator Stan Lee who not only makes cameos in the Hollywood films but also in the video game version. The game also does a great job of bringing together all the time periods of all the Marvel superheroes whether the comic takes place in the past, present, or future. The blending of times and worlds makes it reasonable that all of these characters would all be in the same place at the same time facing the same villainous foe. With sharp graphics and a great plotline, Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for PlayStation 4 is a must-have for any fan of humor, battle, and superhero adventures.
