How it works
The Lego Duplo Batman building set is designed to challenge a child’s imagination while giving them a scenario to play out with the included DC Comics superhero figurines. The Lego Batman set comes with three Duplo figurines: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. What’s also included in the set is a cat that is drifting on a piece of wood after having fallen into the Gotham City River. Children can then create a scenario where the three superheroes find a way to save the cat. Superman comes by himself as he flies through the air. Wonder Woman has her cycle while Batman is in the Bat Boat rushing to save the cat’s life. The set also comes with a moveable bridge that can allow Wonder Woman to cross, and when the bridge is open, Batman can speed by in the Bat Boat. The entire set is to be assembled by the child to their liking as they use their imagination to create the scene and storyline of their choosing.
Some parents have found it helpful to not have any child under the age of three play with the set just to be on the safe side since most children have grown out of the “toy-in-mouth” phase by this time. When the box is opened and the pieces are taken out, there are also smaller plastic bags that the pieces come in, which also poses another choking hazard, so it is advised that parents open the set and put the pieces out for the child to begin playing with while the parent watches on and helps their child build the set and ensure they are playing safely.
The other pieces that come with the set are the blocks that make up the other parts of the bridge, and there is a design to be followed that creates the two towers that will rest over the bridge. Superman can perch on one of the towers while Batman’s Bat Boat can sail on the blue river base. Wonder Woman’s cycle can be used to cross the bridge when the bridge is open she can jump the bridge’s gap. All these movements happen by your child moving the pieces themselves as nothing in this set moves on its own.
The figurines’ heads move from side to side, their arms move up and down, but their legs are attached to each other and move in tandem. The bottoms of the feet are designed with holes that fit into or onto any Lego block, and the hands are curved to hold objects or fit into the cycle or Bat Boat and grip onto the controls. When opening the box and removing the figurines, you will notice that the capes come separate from the figurines. The capes will need to be placed onto the figurines, and if a child feels inclined to do so, the capes can be switched at will depending on what story they are creating with the set.
The Lego mission of helping a child or adult create what they envision in their minds continues with the Duplo Batman building set. Although there is a certain design to the set and a set of building rules to follow, any child or adult can create any type of bridge tower or scenario they wish. Lego building blocks have been designed for the littlest of hands, so young children (while being supervised by an adult) can grip the blocks and easily piece them together to create whatever type of city they choose.
The cat floating on the piece of wood can be on top of the tower, in the water, on the bridge, in the Bat Boat, or on the back of Wonder Woman’s cycle. The possibilities are endless as to how the story can be told and how the set can be built. There are alternative ways to build the bridge towers, but the child can build whatever bridge they see fit. In the end, the story can be changed and the cat could be the superhero saving the lives of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman.
For the adult collector, this set would make a good gift because there won’t be any other set of this kind produced. The set can remain closed and be part of anyone’s toy collection, or if it’s a gift for a child, it can be enjoyed and played with and used as a tool for exploring storytelling, building, motor skills, and imagination building.
Bat Boat and Motorcycle
Once the steering gear piece is inserted into the boat, then Batman’s curved Duplo hands can be connected to the piece so that he can be moved easily in the boat without falling out of it. Wonder Woman’s motorbike follows a similar design with her signature “W” logo in colors that match her traditional Wonder Woman outfit. Her curved hands are placed onto the handlebars of the bike, while her feet are clipped into the base of the bike so that she remains connected to it as she rides along the bridge.
Although this is the storyline that comes with the set, children have the opportunity to create more stories in an unlimited way that suits their imaginations. The Lego Duplo Batman building set has the potential to entertain children for hours and hours giving them opportunities to grow their minds and their creativity while working with easy-to-use and easy-to-handle materials that are safe and are versatile enough to be quickly interchanged and used to your child’s liking.
Children can also take any Lego and use it to build. For those families that already own Legos, the more pieces you have the more you can create allowing children to use their imagination skills and building skills to make stories and more buildings as their Gotham City grows to their liking. For the toy collector, this makes a great gift or a great addition to anyone’s toy collection as this particular set is no longer in production. The Lego Duplo Batman building set is a great choice for the parent who wants to encourage their child to be creative, but this particular set is expensive and may not be worth the cost.
