How it works

Nothing makes people laugh more or pay attention more than suspense, and suspense is at the core of the Pie Face Game from Hasbro. You and your family or friends can have hours of fun as you take turns to see who gets spared from getting a pie in the face and who becomes the victim of the purple hand. The Pie Face Game has players place their faces through a cut-out splashguard facing a mechanical hand loaded with whipped cream or a wet sponge. After a player spins the wheel to see how many revolutions they have to crank the hand, they begin to crank them and hope the hand doesn’t release hitting them with whipped cream or the sponge. With 25 points needed to win, this game can be played multiple times in a night bringing much laughter to your friend or family gathering.

Assembly Required

Assembly Required

The Pie Face Game by Hasbro comes out of the box disassembled. Each section of the game comes in its own plastic bag. Remove each piece from its bag and then put the game together. There is no need for any tools or a lot of time because the pieces all snap-in together rather easily and it should not take more than a few minutes to put everything together. The pieces snap-in, in such a way that you can also take the game apart when you are finished so that everything can be placed back in the box for easy storage. The game comes with one splashguard/face cut out, one spinner, a purple mechanical hand, one purple mechanical arm, a chin rest, two handles for the crank, the game guide, and a game sponge. With the exception of the guide and the sponge, all the pieces are easily snapped together to make the apparatus for the game.
Game Rules

Game Rules

The Pie Face Game by Hasbro has easy to follow and easy to learn rules. There is actually only one basic rule and that’s to flick the spinner and turn the crank the number of times indicated by your spin. Before spinning push the purple hand and arm down flat so that it is at a 180-degree angle. Spray whipped cream onto the hand (whipped cream is not included in the box, so you will have to supply your own whipped cream to play the game), or you can also wet the sponge that is included in the box and place that on the hand in the event that you either do not have whipped cream or someone doesn’t want to use whipped cream due to dietary restrictions or allergies to start the game.

Once that has been done, each player takes turns spinning the spinner to see who has the highest number. The player with the highest number goes first. In the event that two or more players tie with the highest number then those players will continue to spin until one person has the highest number. Once the player with the highest spin is determined that player will go first.
Playing the Game

Playing the Game

Once the person with the highest spin is ready, play can begin. The first player to go will then spin the spinner and whatever number they land on between the numbers of one and five will determine the number of times they crank the handles. As the handles are cranked, the purple arm and hand will begin to get more and more taught until eventually, it has to release. If the arm and hand are released, the person who is doing the cranking will get a face full of whipped cream or a wet sponge to the face depending on what was placed onto the hand when the round began. Play continues until all players have had a turn and enough points have been earned by one player to declare them the winner.
Scoring the Game

Scoring the Game

Scoring the game is very easy. Choose one person to keep score and have them follow the scoring rules. The scoring rules are as follows: if a player spins and cranks the handle the number of times as indicated by their spin and they do not get hit in the face by whipped cream or the sponge, they earn double the points that they spun. For example, if a player spins a five and does not get hit in the face with the whipped cream or sponge, then they will earn ten points. If this occurs with a spin of four then the player receives eight points, etc.

If a player spins a certain number but then decides to not crank the handles that same number of times but a lesser number of times, then they will only receive the number of points indicated by how many times they turned the crank. If a player chooses to crank the handles more than the number that was spun, that player will still only receive the number of points indicated by the spin times two if they are not hit in the face with the whipped cream or the sponge. If a player is ultimately hit in the face with the whipped cream or sponge, they will receive zero points. The player who earns 25 points or more first wins the game.
Design

Design

The Pie Face Game by Hasbro has an easy design that is simple and not overly complicated. The entire game weighs about eleven ounces. The game base is a half-circle where the arm and hand click in as do the crank handles. There is a slit on the back of the half-circle where the splash mask fits so that players can lean their heads into the circular opening. The chin rest is then placed behind the mask so that players can rest their chins in order to comfortably place their faces into the splash mask. The entire color scheme is yellow and purple, and the facemask is designed to look like a small boy in a striped shirt getting pelted in the face with a cream pie.
Safety Design

Safety Design

When you open the box to the Face Pie Game by Hasbro, you will notice that the most important part of the setup is the purple hand where you place the whipped cream or the wet sponge. Many parents have believed that the hand was constructed wrong because the only way to put the hand on correctly is to put it on backwards. When snapped in, the back of the hand is where you place the whipped cream or wet sponge and not the palm of the hand. This was done purposely by the manufacturer for safety reasons. By constructing the hand so that the whipped cream goes on the back of the hand means that the hand is bowed out in a way that will protect the rest of your face because the hand will come in contact with the nose first.

If the hand was bowed out in the opposite direction, the nose would be cupped, and the risk of the fingers poking you or your child in the eye is greater. The backhand is a safer way to ensure that the hand only hits your nose. Some parents have found it useful to put goggles on their children while playing the game in order to truly ensure that cream or water does not get into their child’s eyes.
Holiday Play

Holiday Play

A majority of parents and grandparents have purchased the Face Pie Game by Hasbro for holiday events. The most popular event that the game has been purchased for is Thanksgiving. Many parents and grandparents have found that for post-dinner game playing, the Pie Face Game was a hit with their children and grandchildren. The Pie Face Game gives families and friends the opportunity to stay around the table after dinner and continue to play games and have a game night that may not otherwise happen. Grandparents and parents have found that the younger children of the family find the game most enjoyable and are the most entertained by how the game unfolds.
Social Interaction

Social Interaction

The Pie Face Game is also a great way to keep children socially active within their family or among their group of friends. In an era where television, tablets, and smartphones are the norm to entertain young children and adults, the board game is the last resort in at-home entertainment. Many families have found board games to be a useful tool in keeping kids off of electronics and verbally engaged with other members of their family. Because of the nature of the Pie Face Game and its comical way of being played, family members seem to be most intrigued by this game and the suspense that comes along with it.
Family Time

Family Time

The Pie Face Game has been found to bring families together on a new level. In the tradition of board games that bring families together in a domestic setting where parents and their children can bond and communicate, the Pie Face Game continues that tradition. The age range for this game is the age of five and older, and what kid would pass up the opportunity to see one of their parents get hit in the face with a handful of whipped cream.

The Pie Face Game is a great way for parents and other adult members of a family to be able to spend time with the younger kids and entertain them in a way that will make them laugh. The hilarity that most children get to experience from the messiness of the game and how adults react well to the mess and getting laughed at puts all generations on the same level as everyone is equal in play as it is simply a game of chance and not a game of reason or intelligence or knowing facts. The Pie Face Game is simply spinning a wheel and hoping for the best and while doing so bringing together the family without distractions.
Counterfeit

Counterfeit

Some buyers have been the victims of counterfeit versions of the Pie Face Game by Hasbro. Most of these counterfeit sets have been purchased through third party suppliers in China. The two ways to know for sure if your set is counterfeit is to, one, look at the front of the box. The real version should display in a squirt bubble in the lower right-hand corner of the box “Whipped Cream Not Included”. On the counterfeit sets, the squirt bubble reads “Squirty Cream Not Included”. If you receive the latter then you have purchased a set that was not made from Hasbro. The second way for you to know if the set is real or fake is that when you open the set and begin to put out the pieces to be assembled you will notice that the purple hand is completely flat. In the real set by Hasbro, the purple hand is curved. If the purple hand you receive in your set is not curved then you have a counterfeit set.
Price

Price

The Pie Face Game by Hasbro has a mid-range price tag. Some buyers have also seen a spike in pricing during the holiday season as many parents and grandparents have purchased this game for their families during the holiday time of year. The game also gained notoriety on social media through buyers posting funny videos of the game online causing there to be a spike in price. At the moment, the pricing seems, reasonable.

Conclusion

The Pie Face Game by Hasbro has proven to be a great addition to anyone’s board game collection or game night. The game is absurd, yet funny and entertains anyone who is either playing the game or watching from the sidelines. The game has only one real rule and no pieces to lose or worry about making it a fast and easy board game to take out and play. It will entertain players of all ages and create memories and videos that will last awhile.
