Board games have been around since time immemorial. In fact, many of the successful men and women in history all grew up playing with at least one board game. When it comes to strategy and critical thinking that borders on making decisions on the fly, the Sequence board game is one of the best. However, because of its rather complicated game play, the traditional Sequence game might not really be ideal for kids. That’s why Jax came up with a special version designed specifically for the little ones between the ages of 4 and 7 years: the Jax Sequence for Kids. In this article, we are going to explore deeper the ins and outs of this revamped version of a classic board game.
The Jax Sequence for Kids
One of the most interesting things about the Jax Sequence for Kids is that the 42 playing cards are printed entirely of lovable animals that preschool children can easily identify. It does not contain any word which may prove difficult for some children who may not have learned yet how to read. Because the characters on each of these playing cards are easily identifiable, it makes for an easy game play. Technically, even if kids will not really be following the mechanics of the game, they can nevertheless, play it by matching colors and images.
Aside from the 42 playing cards, the Sequence for Kids also comes with 21 playing chips each of red, yellow, blue, and green colors. It also comes with a beautiful folding game board that is made of thick, high grade cardboard and then topped with a glossy finish.
The objective of the Jax Sequence for Kids is pretty simple: the first player who completes a sequence of four similar colored chips placed in a row wins. A dealer distributes 3 playing cards to the different players. The game calls for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 players. The player seated to the left of the dealer will pick a playing card from their set of 3. He or she then places the chosen card on the pile of cards on the table with the playing card facing up. He or she then places a colored chip on a corresponding image on the Sequence game board. He or she then draws another card from the draw deck. There are two specialty cards that players have to be familiar with. A Unicorn card allows the player to place the colored chip just about anywhere on the game board. A Dragon card, on the other hand, allows the player to remove the colored chip of another player.
It’s all about strategic thinking especially in making the choice of which animal or figure to place your first colored chip on. And if your kid really does get a Unicorn or even a Dragon card, it’s all about how to use these specialty cards.
· Animal prints on playing cards will not require any reading
· Easy to follow instructions
· Folding game board allows for neater storage
Benefits for Kids
Facilitates simple problem solving
– Since the Jax Sequence for Kids is designed primarily for preschool children you really cannot expect it to stimulate the development of more complex problem solving skills
. At the very least, the playing cards can be used to match the images on the game board while the chips can also be stacked according to their respective colors. These can provide for the foundation of simple problem solving skills which, hopefully, will lay down the foundation for more complex cognitive processes.
Introduces concept of strategic thinking – The traditional Sequence game requires strategic thinking. A 4 year old can care less for creating a strategy. However, the game should provide the necessary building blocks for understanding the concept of strategic thinking.
Refines manual dexterity – Picking the playing cards and laying the colored chips on the game board require excellent control of the fine muscles of the hands, especially the fingers. The action also help improve visual motor coordination as well as the use of spatial awareness in commanding the fingers take hold of either the card or the chip.
The Bottom Line
