How it works

Tomy’s Hide and Squeak Eggs are a dual learning experience in one for your child. The eggs not only help your child learn colors and shapes, but they also begin to recognize patterns and work on their dexterity and motor skills. The eggs are designed small enough for your child’s little hands to be able to grasp them and play with them without dropping them. The shells of the eggs are not snapped together so it will take just a little bit of strength on your child’s part to open the eggs and explore what is inside. When your child is all done playing, the eggs come in their own carton for safekeeping, which turns out to also be part of the learning experience.

Design

Design

The Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs are designed to not only look like real eggs, but they are stored like real eggs. The set of six eggs comes in a plastic egg carton that snaps closed to keep the eggs safe. Once opened, there are six eggs, and each egg has its own facial expression and each expression is a different color. Each egg has a “crack” around its middle, which is the separator for your child being able to lift the top of the shell off to reveal what’s inside. What’s inside is a colorful chick. The chick will match the color of the face on the outside of the shell. When you push down on the chick it makes a squeaking noise that resembles the noise that a chick makes.

When you turn the eggs upside down, the bottoms are all different shapes and the shapes on the bottom correspond with the shape that is in that cup of the carton. Each egg belongs in its own cup as the bottom shape must match the shape in the bottom of the cup. When all the eggs are placed in their proper cup, you can then close the carton and snap it closed and store the eggs for future play.
Facial Recognition

Facial Recognition

Each egg of the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs has its own cartoon face. The facial expressions are yelling, sleeping, smiling with freckles, smiling with the tongue sticking out, scared, and smiling with the eyes closed. When the eggs are opened, the chick inside has the same facial drawing as the eggshell.

For this characteristic of the toy, your little one can learn to match the shapes of the face and the facial drawings by placing the proper face shell on the proper chick. You can mix the shells and then hand one to your child and ask them to place it on the proper chick. When this is done, you can explain to your child what the different faces mean and your child can also learn to understand emotions and the facial expressions that stand for certain emotions. This can then become a fun interactive game you can play with your child that will engage them in learning and making them laugh when you start to act out and explain the different faces.
Color Recognition

Color Recognition

Each face of the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs not only has its own facial drawing, but each egg’s facial drawing is a different color. The color of the drawing matches the color of the corresponding chick. As you are teaching your child about the different facial expressions and helping them learn to match the shapes of the faces to the proper chick, you can also teach your child how to match the colors.

The chicks come in six different colors. The colors are yellow, orange, red, green, pink, and purple. Just like with the mixing of the facial drawings, you can take all of the top shells off of the eggs and mix them up and hand a shell to your child and help them figure out what color and face matches with which chick. Your child will eventually begin to build the skills necessary to not only understand and recognize colors but also how to say colors as you get them to repeat what you are saying. Although this may be more difficult for children who are not old enough to learn how to speak, it works well with older toddlers who have started to develop the ability to speak and the muscles to formulate words. The color game is a great way to interact with your child and take command of their learning experience.
Shape Recognition

Shape Recognition

Each egg of the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs has its own unique shape on the bottom of each shell. The shape on the bottom of the shell corresponds to the cup in which the egg is located. The six shapes on the bottom of the shells are a circle, a cross, a square, a heart, a star, and a triangle. If you take all of the eggs out of the carton, you can then take all three of the learning tools provided by the eggs and use them all together. With the shells off, your child can match the faces, match the colors, and match the shapes. By having your child put the eggs back together with the proper color and face you can then ask them what cup in the carton the egg belongs in. If your child chooses the wrong cup for the wrong shape they will then begin to understand how shapes fit together and how to differentiate between the different shapes found on the eggs and on their other toys.

This part of the toy allows for another level of interaction where you can begin to point out how each shape is different and what each shape is called. This way, children will begin to put all of their recognition skills together and begin to form the basis of what their early education will be when they join preschool and kindergarten. A toy like the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs will begin to form the foundation of that learning and the interaction of playing they will get by playing with their parent is also instrumental in their early education.
Dexterity

Dexterity

The eggs of the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs are designed to be small enough for your little one’s hands to grip onto. The eggs are at a size where they can fit into the hands of infants and toddlers without the eggs being too big that they fall. The size of the eggs allows for your child to build their dexterity skills by being able to hold and manipulate the toy.

Right from the start, your child will be using their arm strength to play with the toy. Their first step in playing with the toy is to open the carton. Since the carton snaps closed, your child will learn how to get their body balanced and sturdy. When your child is holding the egg, they can put the egg in one hand and pull off the top with the other. The simple act of taking the top shell off of the egg also allows your child to engage their core for balance. Your child will have the exercise of stabling themselves and keeping themselves centered in the action of using both hands and arms to perform a function. Once the egg is apart, they can then use their skills of manipulation to rotate the egg in their hand and lift it up for them to see the color and shape. The same skills are used for when your child lifts up the carton to be able to see inside and see what shapes are where for them to fit the proper egg into the proper cup. After your child is done playing with the eggs, they can then close the carton and snap it shut learning how to put their toys away and keep all the parts together in one spot.
Throwing

Throwing

Many parents who have purchased the Tomy Hide and Squeak Eggs have had to go search for a part or two. When your child gets into their throwing phase of throwing food and bottles off of their highchair, they will do the same with their toys. It may be a good idea to always be present when your child is playing with the Hide and Squeak Eggs so that they don’t lose any of the shells. The eggs can also hurt a child if one child throws an egg at another child. This could be a good opportunity to teach your child how to play nicely and not throw their things around the house.
Safety

Safety

The parts of the Tomy Toomie Hide and Squeak Eggs do not pose a choking hazard because the parts are too big, but always supervise your child with any toy that has multiple parts. Although your child may not be able to fit the egg shells in their mouths, there is the possibility of them biting down on them or the parts chipping or cracking that may pose a threat. The eggs are also made out of a hard plastic that could hurt your child if the egg is thrown at them or another child. When not in use, it’s best to keep the eggs together and stored away to prevent stepping on the eggs or potentially tripping over them if they are lying around on the floor.
Price

Price

The price of the TOMY Toomies Hide and Squeak Eggs is priced very low. When you think about the price you pay for the amount of education you will receive by playing with the eggs, the price seems like a steal. The eggs help teach your child so many different things with the colors, shapes, and drawings. The eggs also go on to teach balance, dexterity, manipulation and help with coordination. For the low price, you are getting a toy that helps foster skills both cerebral and physical. The eggs teach on multiple levels including storing toys and keeping all the pieces together when playing. This toy is a must buy for parents with young children who are beginning to learn.
Age Range

Age Range

The age range of the Tomy Toomies Hide and Squeak Eggs is six-months-old and older. The age range starts at six months as that is the time where children can sit up and play on their own without the aid of a parent. At six months, children are beginning to learn how to use their bodies and play and pick up different items during play. The older your child gets the more they will benefit from the toy in the realm of education and cognitive skills. Even adults enjoy the Hide and Squeak Eggs and when you push on the chicks they make a chirping sound, which also aids in the aural development of your child.

Conclusion
